Tour a Wind Farm

Prosperity Wind

Prosperity Wind, a 300MW Apex project located half an hour west of Champaign in Piatt County, has entered full commercial operations.

Apex Clean Energy has invested more than $600 million in Piatt County to develop and construct Prosperity Wind, and will continue to own and operate the project. Prosperity will produce enough energy to power 100,000 American homes each year, and represents a significant investment in the local economy. Prosperity Wind:

  • Is expected to generate over $91.5 million in property taxes in total for all taxing districts over the life of the project
  • Will provide over $57.2 million in total school district revenue over the life of the project
  • Will provide nearly $1.2 million in school district revenue annually
  • Provided work for 350 laborers during construction

Virtual Tour

Big Bluestem Wind will also be a 300 MW project, so we want to provide a comparable project to understand the care with which we approach these projects and their surroundings, and how we treat the roads and our leaseholders' land. We understand that your lived experience is an important consideration for whether you choose to participate, and what it means for your neighbors and community to trust Apex. We are proud of the work we've done at Prosperity, and would like to share the result of those efforts with you. Use the map below to take a tour of above-ground facilities and improvements with us.

If you would like to tour the site yourself, you can reach out to one of our team members. We're also working on a self-guided tour you can use to drive through the area yourself- just remember to stay on public roads. You'll be able to download that here soon.

Preserving Starry Night Skies

The Federal Aviation Administration requires everything over 200 feet tall to have blinking lights. This crucial safety feature has made it difficult for many rural communities to both see the benefits of projects like Prosperity and preserve dark skies.

Apex has become an early adopter of a technology aimed at mitigating this effect, known as Aircraft Detection Lighting Systems (ADLS). ADLS uses radar to detect when aircraft approach a wind facility and activates the warning lights only when needed. When no aircraft are present, the lights remain off, preserving starlit skies.

The effect is significant—especially in rural areas where air traffic is limited. Apex expects a 98% drop in light pollution at Prosperity- This means that for the majority of nighttime hours, the turbines remain virtually invisible. To learn more, click here.

Creating Memories

Exploring New Opportunities

As a part of our commitment to local community action, education, and promoting renewable energy, Apex was proud to sponsor three different KidWind teams this spring through our Prosperity Wind Project in Piatt County, Illinois.

KidWind is a competition at both the state and national levels that provides students with an opportunity to design, manufacture, and test their own wind blade designs. Each team is judged on the efficiency and effectiveness of their design. This year, the World KidWind Challenge was held in Arizona. Apex sponsored a team from the Blue Ridge School District and To learn more, click here.
